WHAT IS AN ONLINE DISCUSSION?

An online discussion occurs on a website and is a place where people can hold conversations by posting a question, prompt, or replies. Online discussions allow for interactive communication between two or more people. They can be used as a way to collaboratively share ideas and have discussions on topics that would also traditionally be discussed in a face-to-face format.

By using the Discussions feature in Canvas, users can asynchronously participate in a conversation with an entire class or group on an online discussion board without needing to be in the same place at the same time.

Discussions can also be created as an assignment for grading purposes (and seamlessly integrated with the Canvas Gradebook), or simply serve as a forum for topical and current events.

WHY USE ONLINE DISCUSSIONS?

There are several reasons why it is beneficial to use online discussion boards. Here are some powerful reasons:

Provides an opportunity for the "quiet" or introverted students to have a voice
Students are more likely to utilize critical thinking skills
Students participate more regularly and in a more thoughtful manner than they would normally do in a face to-face instructional setting
Flexible, not limited by time or space
Students develop a stronger class community
Students can use online discussions to give and receive feedback on their work
Provides students with the opportunity to showcase their work to a real audience
